Water is essential to life, so it’s no surprise that staying hydrated plays a significant role in keeping you healthy. Intravenous (IV) hydration therapy can help, and here’s what you can expect from it.

Water makes up about 60% of a body’s weight, and we literally couldn’t live without it. It flushes our bodily systems, lubricates joints, delivers nutrients to cells, and protects tissues and organs.

Not surprisingly, staying hydrated is critical, but hydration means more than simply drinking large quantities of water.

At Quality Health Source in Mableton, Georgia, we offer intravenous (IV) hydration therapy to help restore fluid balances for improved health. If you’re struggling with problems that might benefit from hydration therapy, Dr. Temeka Johnson and our experienced staff can help.

What’s IV hydration therapy?

IV hydration therapy delivers vitamins and minerals directly into your veins using a saline solution (water and sodium chloride).

This delivery method can replenish fluids more effectively than by drinking. It also gives your provider greater control over the dosage of any medications or supplements infused in the solution. IV hydration therapy gives you what you need when you need it.

What does IV hydration therapy treat?

Dehydration is the primary concern for those seeking IV hydration therapy. Dehydration is a deficiency of water and other fluids in the body. Mild dehydration affects blood pressure, body temperature, and heart rate. Severe dehydration can lead to problems like

  • Urinary tract infections
  • Dental cavities
  • Kidney stones
  • Brain damage

IV hydration therapy can provide the necessary fluids to manage problems associated with these conditions and other symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadedness, irritability, thirst, headaches, cramps, dry skin, fatigue, dry mouth, and dark urine.

This therapy also helps with more severe signs, including fainting, confusion, lack of urine, rapid weight loss, rapid heartbeat, and seizures.

What happens during and after IV hydration therapy?

Your IV hydration therapy session takes place in the Quality Health Source office. Once we formulate a solution tailored to your needs, Dr. Johnson inserts a thin tube into an arm vein.

You relax in a comfortable chair for about 45 minutes as the IV solution enters your bloodstream. You might feel a cold sensation at the insertion site, but the procedure shouldn’t hurt. You may also experience a strange taste in your mouth, but it goes away quickly.

After your IV therapy, you can get on with your day. Many people feel significantly better afterward. However, if you continue to experience issues related to dehydration, Dr. Johnson can administer another IV or discuss other treatments to help you recover.
