What are DOT physicals?

A DOT physical is an exam required for all people who drive a commercial vehicle weighing 10,000 pounds (5 tons) or more. The primary purpose of the DOT physical is to determine if you’re healthy enough to operate your vehicle safely without potentially endangering yourself or others.

What does the DOT physical exam check?

The DOT physical exam checks on many important health metrics. To get this information, Dr. Johnson performs a general physical exam, including checking your:

  • Hearing
  • Vision
  • Blood pressure and pulse rate
  • Mouth and throat
  • Lungs and chest
  • Abdomen
  • Neurological health
  • Musculoskeletal health (bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and other soft tissues)

Dr. Johnson may also recommend a urinalysis, which checks your blood sugar level and also screens for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

How often do I need DOT physicals?

Your DOT physical results are valid for two years from the date of issue. Be sure to schedule another DOT physical ahead of your expiration date so you can continue to drive your vehicle without interruption.

What if I can’t pass the DOT physical?

If you can’t pass the DOT physical, you may still qualify to drive a large commercial vehicle. For example, if you have insulin-treated diabetes and stable blood sugar, you can still pass the DOT exam if you pass all the other categories.

If you have another issue holding you back from passing the DOT exam, ask Dr. Johnson if you qualify for DOT exemptions based on your current medical issues. People with correctable vision, seizures, or hearing problems may be eligible for an exemption that allows them to pass the DOT physical and start driving.

If you don’t qualify for exemptions right now, Dr. Johnson can help you make significant improvements to your health through the chronic care management program or other regular medical care. Losing weight, controlling your blood sugar, and treating other health issues could help you pass your next DOT physical.

If you’re ready to start your driving career or need to renew your commercial driver’s license (CDL), a DOT physical is the next step. Call Quality Health Source or click on the online book feature to make your appointment.
